Building One Guidelines

1 .    Please have at least one change of clothes for your child here at school at all times.  This includes underclothes and socks.

2.       Please be aware that we may get messy at school.  But always remember that if your child is dirty, they have had fun!  So please do not send your child to school in expensive clothes or clothes you do not want to get dirty.

 3.       Please try to have your child here no later than 8:30.  All of our academic learning activities occur before lunch, so it is very important that your child be present for those.  If 8:30 is not convenient, please bring them as soon as possible, but please know that all of our teachers will be busy with children and activities, so we will greet you with a smile and a "Hi!", then resume our activity.

 4.       If your child does not come early to eat breakfast (7AM - 8AM) please bring your child
fed and dressed and ready for the day.

 5.   Occasionally, we may post a list of things we need for the classroom like shoe boxes,
paper towel rolls (empty), etc.  These things will always be left over things from home.

 6.       All children get sick occasionally, especially when they are young and their immune
system is not fully developed.  We want to keep everyone as healthy as possible and for this,
we need your help.  If your child has a fever during the night or when they wake up, please do
not send them to school unless they are fever-free without using fever-reducing medicines.

 7.       Rashes are very difficult to identify.  There is a school health regulation that says children
with an unidentified rash must be excluded from school until the child is examined by licensed
health personnel and there is a written note that the child is not contagious. (if a parent/guardian
identifies Chickenpox no note from a doctor is required but the student may not return to school
until all lesions are dried to the crust stage.)

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines!

The Nursery and Pre-school programs serve children two and three years old.
Students are grouped according to age, taking into consideration emotional maturity
and development.

The major pre-school curriculum areas are:

  1. Learning Activities
  2. Math
  3. Social Studies and Science - each teacher implements the curriculum using
a topic sheet given to all nursery, pre-school and primary teachers during
    pre-planning week.
  4. DLM - Development Learning Materials - this class is designed to teach and
reinforce skills through the use of manipulative objects and materials. The fine
motor skills are one area of major emphasis
  5. Art - Nursery and pre-school teachers teach art five days per week. Examples
of art activities are play-dough/clay, crafts, painting, cutting, coloring, and gluing.
  6. Physical Education - at this level, physical education familiarizes the children
with the playground equipment and rules. Classes work on developing large
motor skills through the use of playground and playground equipment.
  7. Music - the nursery and pre-school teachers instruct music classes five days
per week.  All children participate in a fall show, a holiday show and an end
    of the year show
  8. Other Classroom Instructional Aids

            a. Bulletin board
            b. Marker boards
            c. Current dictionary (picture)
            d. Stereo system
            e. TV/VCR
            f.  Creative toys
            g. Flannel boards
            h. Teacher's activity books
            i. Various children's books
            j. Various art materials
            k. Mirror

The nursery and pre-school programs are flexible and accommodate children who
come to school two, three, four, or five days a week. Assessments are done
periodically to assess developmental levels and mastery of language arts and
math skills. Quarterly progress reports are reviewed by the principal and assistant
principals. An Open House is held at the beginning of each school year so that
parents can fully understand the program.

Dear Parents,

Dear Parents,

My name is Cary Bez and I will be your child’s Nursery I teacher. We will also be known as the Butterflies. I am so excited to start a fresh new year with your children. There are so many exciting things I have planned for this new school year. This is going to be my first full school year as a teacher. I took over Nursery I late last school year. I am excited to get things going.

I would like to tell you a little about myself. I moved down to Florida about four years ago. I am originally from Chicago, IL. It was definitely a culture shock to come down here after living in a big city. However, I have loved every minute I’ve been down here. I am continuing my education in Early Childhood to achieve my associate. After that, I hope to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary School teaching.

I cannot wait to meet all of you officially and please do not hesitate to ask me any questions in order to get to know me better. My mission is not only to make your children feel comfortable in their new surroundings, but you as well.

Ms. Cary

Dear Parents,

Hello, and a huge welcome to the 2008-09 school year at Julie Rohr Academy! My name is Susie Bulger and I will be your child’s teacher. Our class, Nursery II is better known as the Ladybugs.

My husband and I moved here with our three children sixteen years ago. We have since raised our children and are now empty nesters.

I have taught at Julie Rohr Academy for sixteen years now. This is my true calling, I wake up every day and anticipate the energy that two year olds bring into the classroom. Our days are by far, never boring.

My goals this year are to bring excitement, challenges and fun to the classroom. I want to keep each and every child involved! Time to learn, socialize, grow and giggle is very important to a young child. Love, security and an overall desire to help them grow are my main goals. Included you will find a list of our daily activities. I hope this helps define our day.

When I am not at J.R.A. my husband and I enjoy cooking, trips to the beach and long bike rides. We have also been blessed with our second grandchild this year. Our little Skylar is three months old and a true gift.

I hope that you know how important your child is and feel confident leaving them in my care. I am first and foremost a MOM!

Once again welcome to J.R.A. And welcome aboard to Nursery II, better known as the Ladybugs.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Susie

P.S.

My hours are from 7:00am until 3:00pm daily. If you have any concerns or question please feel free to call the school at 371-4979 any time. I look forward to meeting each and everyone of you.

August 2008

Dear Parents,

Hello and welcome to the 2008-2009 school year. My name is Allison Vance and I am excited to begin my fourth year at JRA.

Here is some information about myself.

I was born and brought up in Scotland and I came to do voluntary work in America in the summers of 1994 and 1995. It was during that time that I met my husband Vince and we were married in 1997. My husband is a pilot for Netjets Aviation based out of Columbus, Ohio. We have one son, MacKenzie who is in 4th grade at JRA and he is such a blessing in our lives. This will be his fifth year at JRA and my fourth. During my four years at JRA I have worked with all grades but I have the most pleasure with the little ones in the school. This will be my second year as a Preschool teacher.

I have an M A. degree in Hotel and Catering Management from Dundee University, Dundee, Scotland and a teaching Certificate in Further Education from Jordanhill Teaching College, Glasgow, Scotland. Prior to coming to America I worked in Hotel Management and during the last nine years I taught Hospitality and Tourism related subjects at Perth College. Since I have been at JRA I have completed the Florida childcare courses and will continue my interest in childcare education.

My interests include music. I enjoy singing and playing flute. I am a Board member for The Sarasota Choral Society. I am active in my church and thoroughly enjoy family fun and laughter. I also like to assist my husband in his new video production business.

I am honored and pleased to be part of the JRA family and team and I hope that every child will come to experience the love and care that I and my family have received during our time at JRA

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. I work from 8.00am to 1.30pm and can make myself available at other times. You may contact me at JRA at 371-4979.

Sincerely,

Allison Vance

Dear Parents,

My name is Sarah Watkins, and during the 2008-09 school year; I will be working with many different students here at JRA.  I will have a split schedule, spending the morning with elementary and intermediate students as a facilitator, and the afternoon with Preschool 1 for Mrs. Allison. I have worked as a Nursery Teacher in Building 1 for the last two years, and I am pleased to continue my work there. I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with the elementary and intermediate students this year. During the time I will spend with them, they will be working on learning activity packets to enrich the material taught in their language arts and math classes. I can’t wait to get started!

A little about myself:  I am from Indiana, Pennsylvania; a small town about an hour northeast of Pittsburgh. Not only is it the Christmas tree capital of the world, but it is also the hometown of actor Jimmy Stewart. I lived in Pennsylvania my entire life until I graduated from Penn State in May of 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, a Certificate in Technical Writing, and a healthy dose of Lion’s Pride. We Are…Penn State! After moving to Florida that same month, I did administrative work in an office for a year and hated every minute of it. I finally decided to pursue my initial career choice: teaching. I got married in February of 2005 to my wonderful husband John, and shortly thereafter, I answered an ad in the paper for a Preschool Aide at this place called Julie Rohr Academy…I have been here ever since!

There are many exciting things that go on at JRA, and I am happy to say that I have been a part of several of them. For the past two years, I have helped Miss Michelle out with the Yearbook Committee. This is so much fun and we will be doing it together again this year. Any interested students should definitely check it out! Also, for the past two years, I have been a part of the Adult Choir for the Broadway musicals that the school performs at Van Wezel. It was a wonderful experience; it is amazing what you can learn about yourself through the Performing Arts. This year, I am pleased to say that I will serve as Secretary for the PTO. I will be taking over the position from Miss Debbie, and I hope to see lots of parents and teachers at our meetings!

I am really looking forward to this school year, and I hope that you are as excited about it as I am.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Sarah

Hello!  My name is Debbie Tisdale and I have had the good fortune to be associated with Julie Rohr Academy since 1986 when my family moved to Florida from Maine.

At that time, my husband and I only had four children but we managed to increase that number to seven!  All of those seven have graduated from Julie Rohr Academy.

Our oldest, Maureen, lives in Detroit, Michigan and is an editor with the Detroit News. After leaving JRA, she graduated from Booker High School, got her degree in journalism from the University of Central Florida and immediately became involved in her career.

Our next oldest, Billy (now Bill to everyone but Mom), lives in Chicago, works for J. P. Morgan, is attending Kellogg Graduate School in pursuit of his MBA and got married last October.  Shelly, his wife, is a lovely lady. She also works for J. P. Morgan.

Next is Bobby (now Rob) who lives in Maine and has his own real estate management company.  He is married to a lovely young lady, Bethany, and together they have given me my first grandchild, Chloe, who turns two years old this month!

Tiffany lives in Florida and attends the University of Central Florida in Orlando.  She is majoring in Public Administration and will be a senior this year.  She is the “peacemaker” in our family.

Moving down the list, our next is Brice who is 21 and attends the University of South Florida.  He has worked at Julie Rohr Academy since high school and will be graduating at the end of this school year.

Baron is our 19 year old.  He obtained his GED at Sarasota County Vocational Technical School. Baron works at Julie Rohr Academy as the coach’s aide.

Our youngest, Mavi, graduated from Julie Rohr Academy last year and is attending Sarasota Military Academy with Julie this year.  She is the “baby” of the family and much adored by all brothers and sisters (OK – so sometimes “adored” might be an exaggeration!)  Her full name is Mavourneen, which is Irish for “my darling”.

Sadly, we lost our husband and father three summers ago.  We were visiting in Maine when he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.  We had to stay in Maine for a while to resolve some personal issues but were fortunate to be able to return to the “home” we had known for so long.

I consider myself very lucky to be back at Julie Rohr Academy and look forward
to meeting all the parents.  Thank you for letting me enjoy your children!

                                                                                            Sincerely,
                                                                                            Ms. Debbie J

Dear Parents,

My name is Kathleen Hughes, but the children call me Ms. Kathy.  This is my third year at Julie Rohr Academy. I am very excited to be teaching preschool this year!  I am looking forward to an exciting, busy, and fun year!

My husband, Michael, and I moved to Sarasota from the small village of Newbury, Vermont three years ago.  We are the proud parents of two young men.  Matthew currently lives in Wisconsin and Robert lives in Washington D.C.  In my free time, I like to read, spend time with my husband and friends, listen to music, scrapbook, play the flute and sing.

I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in English from Johnson State College.  I hold a Vermont certificate as a Special Education teacher from the University of Vermont.  Upon moving to Florida, I obtained my Florida Teaching Certificate for Elementary Education.  In Vermont, I taught severely disabled students in K - 2 for ten years, preschool for three years, kindergarten for 5 years, and was the special education case manager for one year before we relocated to Sarasota.

I look forward to working closely with you to ensure that your child gets the most out of his/her educational experience at JRA!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school at 371-4979 or through my current e-mail at kathleen_hughes@hotmail.com.

I look forward to meeting you!
