Dear Parents,

WELCOME to Building 2!

We are very excited about the school year! We have great plans for your wonderful children. We are looking forward to meeting everyone and enjoying school.  This letter will explain some “class policies”.  Our PreK classes are Fish, Ducks and Rabbits.  The door for our classroom is facing Building 3.

CLASS TIMES:

All PreK classes will begin circle time at 8:30.  Before that

we will play with toys in the classroom. It is very important that ALL students arrive before 8:30.  When a child comes in

late it is disruptive for your child and the class. (Thanks for your cooperation.) Academic classes end at 2:00 for those who are not extended care.

CUBBIES:

Each child will be assigned a “cubby” for his/her things.

Everyone needs to bring a complete set of spare clothes

and leave in the cubby at all times. They may also bring a small towel for rest time.  Please NO pillows, blankets or

stuffed animals!!!

MESSAGE CENTERS:

Letters, communications, accidents reports and statements will be placed in the message centers. Please check these

everyday!!

CLIPBOARDS:

We will use the clipboard for attendance.  PLEASE ALWAYS SIGN YOUR CHILD IN AND OUT!!!

DRESS CODE:

Attached to this letter are the dress code guidelines for Building 2.  Please remember children MUST wear sneakers or shoes with closed toes and heels!  NO sandals, flip flops, crocs, boots or such.

Click here for the Building II Dress Code - please read!

MEALS:

We encourage good nutrition for snacks and meals.  It is important that your child begins the day with a healthy

breakfast with a limited amount of sugar.  Cereal is

available at school until 7:45.  We encourage the children

to eat healthy lunches and always drink plenty of water.

We will encourage each child to eat foods from each food group, and especially fruits and vegetables. If your child brings a lunch box please offer several healthy choices.

People, who eat healthy think better, feel better and perform tasks more successfully.

Please NO sippy cups!

WHAT TO BRING TO SCHOOL:

Children may bring books, videos and things to share

that pertains to the topic or letter of the week. Please

leave ALL TOYS, jewelry and small items at home.

INFORMATION PACKETS:

You will receive a folder of letters that gives you an opportunity to learn more about the staff that spends time with your child.  Please sign and return the permission slip for the guinea pigs and rabbits, and the one from the handbook.

We are looking forward to having lots of fun.  We are
eager to get to know you and your child. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks for your help and cooperation.

Mrs. Sally, Ms. Darlene, Mrs. Melinda

General Information

Students in the primary building (Building II) range in age from four to six years. They are generally grouped according to age, taking emotional and developmental maturity into consideration.

The primary building consists of three Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) classes for four-year olds, a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) for those students who turned five in the summer or missed the cut-off date for Kindergarten by one to three months, and a Kindergarten/Pre-1st class.

All teaching materials follow the curriculum of the school. One of the major strengths of our program is the wide variety of resources and materials. These materials are used primarily for language arts, math, handwriting, and developmental learning (DLM). The classes are basically self-contained and have their own classrooms.

The following subjects are taught:

  1. Language Arts
    a. Workbooks and/or worksheets
    b. Assessment tests and/or observation
    c. Readiness books
    d. Learning games
    e. Variety of manipulatives
     f. Variety of instructional materials
    g. Letter tapes and letter programs

  5. DLM (Development Learning Materials) - this class is designed to teach and/or reinforce skills taught through the use of manipulative objects and materials. Fine motor skills and visual motor skills are two areas of major emphasis.
  6. Creative Activities - each class has one scheduled creative activities class per day. Activities include:
    a. Cooking
    b. Puppets
    c. Crafts and special projects
    d. Creative play toys (e.g. blocks, theme toys, dolls, housekeeping furnishings, plastic animals, et. al.)

Dear Parents,

My name is Sally Malatesta. The children call me Mrs. Sally.  I have been at Julie Rohr Academy for fourteen years.  I teach PreK and I am the coordinator for Early Childhood Education for Building 1 and Building 2.

I grew up in Sarasota and went to Phillippi Shores Elementary, Brookside and Riverview High schools.  I attended Stetson University in Deland.  My degree is in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I really love small children and enjoy teaching and nurturing them.  It is great to watch them grow and learn!

My favorite thing to do is spend time with my family.  My husband, Frank, and I have two children, Kimberly and Frankie.  They moved to the Orlando area after graduating from college and still live there with their families.  We have four grandchildren; Frankie is four years old, Alexis is three years old, Michael is two years old and Evie is almost two years old. (I always have photos readily available.)

In my spare time I enjoy reading, cooking, traveling, antique shopping, photography and sewing.

I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you and your children.  If you have any questions about your child or the program please let me know.  I always want what is best for your child.

Sincerely,

Sally

August – 2008
Dear Parents:

Welcome to our very special K/Pre-1st classroom. My name is Denise LaMilza, but everyone calls me Dede. I will be your child’s teacher this 2008 – 2009 school year. I have been teaching at Julie Rohr Academy since 1984. Throughout the past 24 years I have met so many wonderful people at JRA and made many beautiful friendships. I cannot believe I am starting my 25th year at JRA. I look forward to adding this year to my long list of treasured memories.

I am originally from Grosse Pointe, Michigan near the Detroit area and graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. In Michigan, I taught Special Education for the multiple handicapped, preschool for the learning disabled, kindergarten, and first grade. I have also traveled extensively and speak a conversational French and German.

I enjoy spending my spare time with my family and friends enjoying a good home cooked meal, good conversation, and a good movie. I keep very active after my schoolday helping out with our cow/calf operation – the J & L Cattle Company. I am a member of the Sarasota County CattleWomen’s Association and have served as Secretary, Vice-President, and President.

My husband Dominic and I will be celebrating our 34th anniversary on August 17th. Dominic is Director of Purchasing for the Johnson Smith Company in Bradenton. Our family also includes our son Gabe, pugs named Frodo and Lilly and two felines - Cupcake and Twinkie. Gabe has overcome many developmental, physical, and health issues throughout his young life and has become a truly remarkable young man. Gabe just celebrated his 30th birthday and is working for Publix. He attended J.R.A. for eight years, beginning with kindergarten in 1984. It is hard to imagine how the years have flown by.

There are several matters of importance I would like you to know. Your child may bring his/her own morning snack, or we will provide one. In the classroom will be a message center labeled with your child’s name. When you pick up your child at the end of the day, please check the center and his/her tubs for any papers or messages. Each class has its own clipboard with a class list on it called a "sign-in/sign-out sheet". I will write messages to you on the sign-in/sign-out sheet almost daily. So often, the person responsible for picking up a student will hastily sign the student out and pay no attention to a message that may have been written on the sheet. It is the child who misses out when this occurs.

NOTE: It is required to sign your child in each day and sign your child out whenever your child leaves the school. The Sign-out sheet is a legal document! Thank you very much for paying close attention to this important issue.

Each child will have a labeled tub of his or her own that will hold pencil cases and workbooks.

Pre-1st Supply List

Your child will need the following supplies:

1.     A sturdy zippered pencil case (a zippered bank bag works great).  Please do not purchase the small tubular type.  They are too small.

2.     At least 4 regular pencils (sharpened) and a couple of erasers (NO TOY ERASERS!)  The pink erasers work best.

3.     Safety scissors your child can work comfortably (Fiskars scissors work very well.)

4.     A box of 24 Crayola crayons.  Please do not bring more than 24!  (To prevent your child’s crayon from being lost, write your child’s first name on each crayon.)

a.     NOTE: Items 2, 3 & 4 should be the only items in the zippered pencil case.

5.     A 4 oz. bottle of Elmer’s white glue (not the blue glue)

6.     Another zippered pencil bag to hold:

a.     8 large wide tip Crayola markers

b.    8 thin tip Crayola markers

REMEMBER: Please label all supplies.  First name (or initials) on each crayon and marker, please!

7.     Two coloring or activity books to use during homeroom.

***PLEASE: NO BACKPACKS, JEWELRY, OR TOYS.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

My email address is curlytopdeeds@comcast.net or call 377-4492/780-6451.

I am looking forward to an exciting and stimulating school year with your precious children – Let the memories begin!

Yours very truly,

Mrs. Dede

August 2008

Dear Parents and TK Students,

My name is Ashley Doble. This is my third year working at Julie Rohr Academy. This year I have the pleasure of teaching the Transitional Kindergarten class. My first year working here, I was an aide in the TK class and I really enjoyed working with Mrs. Meg and her kids. This past year, I taught preschool. I really enjoy doing art projects and learning about the different topics throughout the year. I am especially excited about the learning curriculum in TK called The Letter People.

Even though this is only my third year teaching, I have been working here every summer and winter break since I graduated from high school. I graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 2002.  I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Health Science from the University of Miami in 2006. I completed two minors in chemistry and psychology. After my college graduation, I decided to come back home to Sarasota. I realized that I needed to take a year off before returning to school to get my master’s degree and Julie Rohr Academy seemed to be the best place for me to spend the year. Last year I became a full-time graduate student at the University of South Florida. I am working on getting my master’s in Mental Health Counseling. I have two more years of school, after which I hope to counsel children either in a school setting or with an agency.

I live with my parents and my dog, Cookie. I have two brothers Andrew and Mat, who attended Julie Rohr for their middle school years. They both live in Minnesota, one in college and the other a recent college graduate. They both played on the college basketball team.  Besides being an avid supporter of their team, I am a huge Miami Hurricane fan. I love college football.

I am very excited about the beginning of the school year. I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting many new ones.

Sincerely,

Ms. Ashley

TK-K Supply List

 1.     Crayon box.  Please get the small 5 X 9 space-maker brand.  The larger size takes up too much room on our tables.

2.     One box of 8 crayons.  Please don’t get any more than 8.  They need to be thin and have your child’s name on each one!  Crayola crayons work the best.  The other brands break too easily.

3.     Washable markers.  Please have each marker labeled with your child’s name.

4.     Two or three sharpened pencils labeled.

5.     Water colors.  Please label.

6.     Four-ounce bottle of white Elmer’s glue.  Please do not label.  This will not be staying in your child’s crayon box.

7.     Scissors.  Fiskar brand works the best – label please!

Thank you,

Ms. Ashley

 August, 2008

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year.  My name is Jeannette McKinney.  I have been with Julie Rohr Academy for twenty-eight years.

I have been married for forty-eight years and have two grown sons.  Thomas lives in Sarasota with two of his three children.  His oldest daughter lives, works and goes to school in Colorado.  Joseph is married and lives in Sarasota with his wife, son, Aden, and two pug dogs, Daisy and Earl.  His son is starting Kindergarten this year.

I love to travel and shop.  Working with children, watching them grow and learn, and being able to be a little part of that makes teaching worthwhile.

I open the school at 6:30 AM every morning.  I teach learning games developed by JRA teachers and myself to PreK, TK and Pre1st.  The purpose of the games is to teach your child to think and to give them a chance to work out problems using their imaginations while having fun learning.

So again, welcome to Julie Rohr Academy.  We are here for you and your child.

                                                                        Ms. Jeannette
